FLASH: Jones faces weekend challenge

Matt Jones

Local boy Matt Jones is set to face strong challenges from some of the world’s best when the Emirates Australian Open’s midway leader starts his third round at The Australian this morning.

Jones, 39, the 2015 open champion, is a shot ahead of England’s Paul Casey and another New South Welshman, Dimi Papadatos. Casey is the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 14.

But the brilliant South African Louis Oosthuizen is just two shots back and threatening.

Jones, Casey and Papadatos tee off at 11.55am.

The morning players have begun their third rounds in beautiful conditions with Queenslander Cameron Smith among the big-name players to be on the course.

The second round of the All Abilities Championship is also underway. Defending champion Johan Kammerstad and Chad Pfeifer of the United States were the overnight leaders.
